Ever since i left Melbourne, I’ve always had a hankering for a good handmade pizza. How i missed the rousing aroma of freshly baked dough. Don’t even let me get started on the taste! In Singapore, there are many restaurants serving fresh home made pizza, but very few specializes in them. Many of them have selections that are mundane and run- of- the- mill. Skinny pizza is too skinny for me, the crust is hard and not satisfactory enough. Spizza is pretty good but it does not hit the spot. The spot meaning the part of your tummy that you feel this comfortable warmth and your taste buds are left satisfied. You do not want to eat another bite for fear of spoiling the perfection you were fortunate enough to taste. I’m pretty picky, only having this feeling 3 times.

So when i unsuspectingly bit into a slice of Pistachio Pesto pizza, i was transported back into Melbourne again. The interesting bit about the pizza is the pesto which really heightened the flavor. It’s akin to putting truffles. Being subtle, you can’t really pinpoint the taste but  yes, its there. Add in a combination of mozzarella, baby arugula, lemon vinaigrette and shaved parmigiano reggiano, it brings about a wonderful combination of salinity, tanginess and an unexplainable warmth. The baby arugula helps to neutralize the flavors a little bit as it might be too overpowering. Just beautiful! It totally hit the spot.

Next, my friends and i ordered the  Spicy Pepperoni pizza. The crust was nicely charred and the dough was warm and soft. It was not bad, but i would prefer Spizzas version better. This pizza had tomato, mozzarella, spicy pepperoni, chili flakes and oregano. The pepperoni was a little too spicy for me, i remember feeling a little annoyed with the constant fiery sensation which resulted in the other flavors to remain hidden.

For dessert we ordered the Nutella Panna Cotta which was silky smooth. Usually panna cotta has a rich flavor but there was only a hint of nutella. It was pretty refreshing. We ordered the lobster tail dessert which was really a crust filling filled with cream. Those were a little hard, my grandpa wouldn’t approve. Too bad I did not get a photo of it.

As you can see from my post, the biggest draw is definitely the Pistachio pesto pizza. I would go back there just to have another bite of that savory goodness. Oh my biggest surprise was that there was no chocolate pizza! It would be such a good idea to have nutella on that delicious pizza dough they have..hmm.. and top it up with some bananas..

Pietrasanta-Portsdam Road

My parents have been raving about Pietrasanta for months when i was still  living in Melbourne. To be honest, when it comes to Italian food we hardly venture out. Out of habit, we always stick to Pasta Fresca because of its homely food and hearty portions. I’ve lost count of how many times we attempted drive towards new restaurants only to U-turn back to our favorite staple.

Pietrasantas’  premise used to be the former Singapore Judo Club premises. They did a great job  transforming it into a homely restaurant, almost feeling  like a cottage. Its comfortable home dining really.  A winning point is that when you order wine, you are able to go into the cellar to choose the bottle you want.

Grilled fresh Squid served with Rocket Salad, Italian Tomatoes, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Lemon

As usual we ordered grilled fresh squid. This dish was served with rocket salad, italian tomatoes, extra virgin oil and lemon. The texture was nice and slightly chewy. It has a slight charcoal taste to it which i like. Forgot to spray the lemon juice on it but even then it was pretty good.

Sorry i forgot the name of this dish, it was parpadelle with cream sauce that has a hint of truffle. It was really good, it was not too creamy which i can’t stand because that clogs up the dish.  I was commenting on how delicious it was when my mom was like “it looks like bak chor mee” which was SO TRUE! Truffle makes everything taste better, the cream is a notch better than many of those that i’m used to being served in restaurants.

                       Eggplant Parmigiana Di Melanzane

And now my favourite italian dish, Eggplant Parmigiana Di Melazane! This dish was excellent. The tomato sauce was rich and tangy with fresh pulps of tomato in it. Yet it was not so chunky which i appreciated as it allows you to taste the eggplant for itself. I wish the dish had a bigger portion because it was wiped out within seconds!

1 kg T-bone Steak grilled with Rosemary and Extra Virgin Olive Oil was the highlight of the night! It smelt so good as the waiter brought it towards our table. It was slightly crispy on the outside but yet the meat itself was tender. It was as tender as Wagyu to me but its cheaper. It came with roasted potatoes which were simply done but very nice. Satisfying!

Do remember to book at least a a day in advance because i heard it is always full during weekends. Oh yes, do give the Focaccia bread a try as well. Being warm and delicious, its perfect on a cold day.
